Through this program, I discovered my passion for visual storytelling, problem-solving, and creating work that connects with people. The supportive faculty, hands-on learning environment, and close-knit community have continuously encouraged me to explore, experiment, and refine my creative voice. Design Goal
The West Liberty University Visual Communication Viewbook is a carefully crafted informational and promotional design, created to showcase the depth, versatility, and community of the Visual Communication major. The goal of this project was to present complex program details in a visually engaging way. The design emphasizes clarity, hierarchy, and cohesion, using a visual system inspired by the university’s existing brand and the surrounding landscape. Through thoughtful typography, balanced composition, and a blend of photography and graphics, the viewbook aims to communicate the program’s concentrations, opportunities, collaborative culture, and emphasis on both conceptual thinking and practical skills.
Key Aspects of Design
Visual Identity: Expanding on West Liberty’s official colours and branding, the viewbook introduces a complementary palette and imagery that reflects the personality and creativity of the Visual Communication major and takes inspiration from West Liberty's landscape, creating a cohesive yet distinctive identity.
Typography and Hierarchy: A clear typographic system organizes detailed content into readable and engaging layouts, using sidebars, quotes, subtitles, and charts to guide the reader and reinforce the program’s structured yet dynamic approach.
Imagery and Illustration: Photography of students, faculty, and facilities are paired with graphic elements inspired by the surrounding landscape, creating a narrative that connects the program to its environment while adding personality and visual interest.
Layout and Composition: Full spreads use scale, layering, and negative space to balance text and imagery, directing the reader’s eye through key information while encouraging exploration and engagement with the content.
Engagement and Tone: The viewbook communicates a sense of community, creativity, and opportunity, highlighting the major’s unique concentrations and collaborative culture. The overall tone is inviting, informative, and inspiring, designed to help prospective students envision themselves as part of the program, while also serving as a resource and point of pride for current students and faculty.
