Postcard Design
Design Goal
This project was developed as a promotional postcard for Phipps Conservatory’s Spring Flower Show: A Closer Look. The design celebrates the beauty and intricacy of nature through detailed floral illustrations, layered transparencies, and soft, harmonious colors. Inspired by the show’s theme of observation and discovery, the composition incorporates florals as both texture and illustration, enhancing visual depth and cohesion. A playful floral typeface was chosen to further unify the composition and complement the illustrated elements. The finished result is a refined and inviting design that reflects both the vibrancy of spring and the Conservatory’s ongoing celebration of botanicals.
Key Aspects of Design
Colour: A fresh, spring-inspired palette was chosen to evoke vibrancy, and the renewal of the season, while maintaining cohesion across the composition.
Typography: Type was thoughtfully integrated with floral illustrations, using layering and subtle shadows to enhance depth and readability. The typeface features floral-inspired counters that echo the botanical theme. Letterforms interact with the organic shapes, creating a dynamic relationship between text and illustration.
Illustration: Floral illustrations, including outlined and dimensional elements, bring a sense of texture and delicacy. Organic shapes and transparency add visual interest while reinforcing the natural inspiration of the piece.
Layout and Composition: Layering, scale, and positioning guide the viewer’s eye through the postcard, creating balance. The design combines precision and artistic interpretation to create a refined and engaging final composition.
